How many times have you attended a local networking event or a conference with a person talking about his new deal? The entire 5 to 10 minutes the conversation was about there favorite subject “me, me, me.”
Unfortunately, these types of people are so obnoxious and clueless they aren’t aware of how uncomfortable they make other people feel.
Personally, if I meet someone like that I usually run for the hills and NEVER look back to see whose coming. That’s just me.
Super social people get so excited networking around great people until they lose focus. The good news is it doesn’t have to be this way.
Here are 4 proven ways to achieve laser focus, action-taking, breakthrough results networking with people:
Be selective to be effective. There are only a select few people who you can connect and develop the kind of relationship that builds real trust, referrals, and that work. Always take into consideration what really will propel your career, learning, or enjoyment and focus on those relationships.
Depth beats breadth. Attend the events that you have interest and knowledge. You’ll get more out of the groups personally and professionally if you get involved. You will stick out like a soar thumb, because most people attending events are secretly nervous and worried about what people think about them.
Talk less, listen more. Always listen more than you talk. Ask at least two questions of every person you meet. And just listen.
What did I learn? The event is over and your back home sorting through the business cards received. Now ask yourself, “what did you learn from each person.” Analyze your interactions with the people at the event and did you talk less and listen more.
At networking or conferences it’s not about selling people on what you have to offer. It’s about finding people who want to listen. It’s about being your true authentic self or keeping it real as some people would say.
You never know who you might be talking to that would help you in ways you can’t begin to imagine. The most powerful strategy you could EVER use while meeting people is to let them see and feel that you care about them along with integrity, commitment, and quality you deliver in real time, over time.
